PACES Overview
By current evolution of exam system by the Royal College, practical exam (PACES) already overcomes the artificial barriers of candidate’s performances. Examiner’s role in PACES is secondary. A candidate faces clinical cases like a real-life problem. Examiners only try to fill the gaps in clinical consultations & examinations.
The 7 Skills for Any Clinical Problem
- Physical examination
- Identifying physical signs
- Clinical communications
- Differential diagnoses
- Clinical judgment
- Managing patient concerns
- Maintaining patient welfare
To be a successful candidate, you must score well in all 7 skills. This is the secret of success in PACES.
Why This Matters
This achievement guides a medical professional in a holistic manner to bring the best outcome for the patient.
PACES evaluates real clinical reasoning and performance in realistic bedside scenarios—beyond memorization.
How to get prepared for PACES
- Better to be in a group. A three-member group is ideal so each can act as Examiner, Candidate, and Patient.
- Record videos of your performance and review critically after each session.
- Make the environment similar to PACES: sanitizer use, allocated time, appropriate instruments.
- Make variations during rehearsal: practice History/Communication stations for half the day, clinical stations for the other half.
- If possible, get help from seniors who already passed MRCP.
- Get relaxed on the day before exam.
PACES Course Overview
PACES is mainly a skill-based exam. We arrange regular sessions useful for beginners as well as mature candidates.
Additional mentors are involved in bedside learning and guidance. Local educational hospitals are selected for bedside learning.
Simulations are also utilized to broaden preparation. In simulation, DOAMS BD is the best in the country.
